The Board of Directors at
High Point Academy (HPA) is pleased to announce the selection of
Brian J. Sherman as its new superintendent. Sherman is currently district ombudsman and assistant to the superintendent at Greenville County Schools, the largest school district in South Carolina. He previously served as principal of Landrum High School and assistant principal of curriculum and instruction at Lugoff-Elgin High School in Lugoff, South Carolina.
Sherman was part of a large pool of candidates for the position. The search narrowed to three finalists who were interviewed by the Board, teachers and staff. “Brian emerged as the right fit for High Point Academy,” according to Board of Directors Chairman Rob Gouge. “With his 25 years of experience, leadership and connections to the community, Brian will be able to build on our strong STEAM based foundation. As a tuition-free public charter school, HPA will continue to seek opportunities to meet the needs of our families. Students and teachers are our top priority and Brian’s passion for academic and real-world success became clear throughout this process.”
Sherman, who lives in Campobello, says he was drawn to High Point Academy by the teachers and their commitment to student-centered education. “I have always been an advocate for students. I am excited to become part of the High Point Academy team and help take it to the next level.” As a teacher in North Carolina, Sherman taught project-based learning to at-risk students. He also coached football, basketball, baseball and track. “I have two children who were heavily involved in sports and two who enjoy acting, so I have a deep appreciation for what High Point has to offer in education, technology, athletics and arts. I am also hugely impressed by the 322,000 square foot building and 25-acre campus off I-26. It offers immense opportunity for growth,” says Sherman.
Sherman earned a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in education from Winthrop University. He is in the process of completing his doctorate at Garner-Webb University. Married for 32 years, Sherman and his wife have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. Sherman will assume the role in July 2021, replacing
J. Brodie Bricker who announced his upcoming retirement in January, following a 53-year career in education. Dr. Bricker has served as Superintendent at High Point Academy since July 2019.
